The contemporary Wild West saloon story filtered through the grapevine about the young stalwart putting up stakes in the distant unknown and untamed frontier to lay claim to his father’s interests left as a legacy. It was an apt test of true grit pitting his tested mettle as a leader in the gangland arenas of Manila while a teenager in the raw, highly volatile outskirts of civilization where nary the laws of the jungle matter much if at all.
Bravery can be reckless abandon like going amuck or over the edge while rabidly frothing in the mouth in a crazed state. The Abba Krishna anoints strength and steely determination with a vision and a presence of mind to fashion heroic deeds. Hence the line is drawn between suicidal bents and rising to the challenge because the former is marked by blood rage while the latter flies with a purpose.
Lost commands are prone to break away in the hinterlands where the chain of command is stretched thinly beyond limits. Three troopers in full battle gear thought wrongly that nightlife patrol was opportune for some drunken R and R to make their rule unmistakably felt by the locals. Feeling like kingpins dispensing the laws in flagrant brutish whimsy, they virtually shot up the bar with freebies and brandished their weapons menacingly.
Enter the reluctant Ed Hagedorn propelled from behind by the hapless neighborhood police while garbed in his trademark blue jeans and white T shirt sketching his lean muscled biceps and chest topped with copper tone frizz. A Waterfront Brando unarmed and fluid with bravado, grappling with the risks as they unfolded like licking flames in an Oriental hellhole, where inebriated military brigands crowed their lust for violence with unmatched firepower. He walked uneasy steady steps to their center table as the three leveled their guns while snickering with the meanest come and get it grin.
The first one who got up to swipe at him with the rifle butt got pulled close to Ed’s chest to provide forced cover against the remaining two who drew beads from opposite ends to mow him down. Glass and wood crashed and groaned against the floor as all bystanders scampered away or ducked leaving the golden boy with his hands full to seek a path for survival with lopsided odds. The close quarter match up tangled into a ball and rolled on the floor while the cohorts held their fire lest their buddy get raked by friendly fire.
The vise like choke hold on the throat put out the lights and made the unwilling wrestler hanging on for dear life to his weapon go limp and gasp for breath. The muzzle of the gun stuck up from the pile up on the floor and blazed at the squinting barely lucid target on the right and threw him back as he let loose with his own aimless burst towards the fluorescent bulbs. The youngest uniformed goon on the left panicked and fired back with impunity. He plugged his comrade full of holes as the latter struggled to free himself over Ed.
In a flash Ed was upon him parrying the M-14 with a roundhouse kick as it continued to spray slugs at the counter where cowering onlookers screamed in pain when grazed. The adversaries grappled in a tug of war for the rifle which kept spewing fire into the walls and windows. A straight to the jaw from an iron fist knocked the straggler out as he lost his grip and footing and skidded under the creaking tables.
The partisan elements in the constabulary detachment threw Ed in jail for murder and assault on authority. Their civilian counterparts kept a round the clock vigil in the barracks to make sure Ed was not shot while allegedly trying to escape. Nevertheless, he was tortured and beat up black and blue behind the sympathizers’ backs until a judge threw out the charges in the name of self-defense. The Abba Krishna blessed Ed Hagedorn’s way to achieve great strides in the development of Palawan to figure nationally.
