I come from many generations of Vichikoffs who perform for the Great Rotterdam Circus in upstate New York. My family performs the aerial feats high on the swings hanging from the big tent dome. My father, David, is 50 years old, but he remains a good upside down catcher over the years.
My eldest brother, Richard, is a trapeze artist too and alternates with my father as a catcher. I am the one who wears frills on my costume to the delight of the crowd. Richard pushes me off and I swing to and fro in high arcs to thrill the stands. At 27 my figure is still lithe and wispy.
The whole tent gasps with lumps in their throats. I fly in the air for a few seconds with only a net to stop me from plunging 40 feet to the ground below. Sometimes I think about it. I’m so twisted inside by my secret problem. High up in the air, nobody notices it. Only Richard and my close in family know my problem.
I have ugly cellulite on my thighs. It came with my 27th birthday. Dimples showed up on the edges of my shorts. They betrayed my advancing years. I cried because I love the circus so much. I’m not ready to retire and grow a family with my fiancée of four years, Stan.
